(Reuters April 12, 2010) — VMware and Salesforce.com, two software makers whose sales have outperformed the industry in recent years, plan to introduce a new cloud-computing product (full article).

Like many people, this little tidbit of information to cross my screen peeked my interest more than anything in recent memory.  Upon visiting the website vmforce.com, you’re presented with a simple and nondescript statement of  “VMForce is coming.  See it here live on April 27.”  It would appear we have a pending partnership between two industry heavyweights.

Salesforce.com is the world’s biggest provider of software that is delivered via the Web. VMware is the top maker of virtualization programs that allow companies to boost the efficiency of computer hardware by running multiple virtual machines on a single piece of equipment for enterprise class data centers.

The combination of the dominant CRM SAAS industry product with the virtualization software maker poses a great deal of possibilities, but to date, neither company has commented on the project.  They simply have pointed to the website and suggested everyone should attend.

Will this be a “virtualization via cloud” Software-As-A-Service offering targeting VMware’s more traditional enterprise clients or will Salesforce.com be making a targeted run at Amazon’s SMB clients currently utilizing Amazon Web Services?

Honestly, this seems a bit odd to me.  I’ve never been a fan of the “cloak and dagger” marketing methods of many Silicon Valley business members.  I really have a great deal to do.  Do I need to sit down and wonder of the technological options that such a relationship could produce?

Answer?  No.

Will I attend the session?  Yes.

Is it worth thinking about at all?  Maybe.  I am curious.  Damn marketing.
